What is it?

The AMUSBMOUNT01 is a USB-C to RJ45 converter designed for Skywatcher mounts that use the EQmod protocol. By replacing the standard hand controller with this converter, you can connect your mount directly to your computer, enabling control via advanced astronomy software like Stellarium or KStars. This allows for precise object tracking, automation, and remote operation, all with a simple and robust connection.

Why did you make it?

Skywatcher mounts are highly regarded among amateur astronomers for their great value and performance. However, using the hand controller limits the mount's potential. I created the AMUSBMOUNT01 to provide an easy and reliable way to unlock more advanced features by connecting the mount to a computer, allowing astronomers to take full advantage of powerful software tools for enhanced observation sessions. The goal was to design a solution that is not only easy to use but also durable enough to provide a consistent connection even during long observing sessions.

What makes it special?

The AMUSBMOUNT01 stands out due to several unique features:

  • USB-C Connection: USB-C is today very popular and people are usually equipped with USB-C cables.

  • Plug-and-Play: The device is natively supported on Linux and windows, meaning no drivers are needed—just connect and start controlling your mount.

  • LED Indicators: Four LEDs provide clear status updates:

    • Two red LEDs indicate power status for both the computer and mount.
    • Two orange LEDs show data transfer in both directions, with TX for communication from the computer to the mount, and RX for the opposite.

How to Use

  1. Connect to Computer: Simply plug the AMUSBMOUNT01 into your computer using a USB-C cable. Once connected, the PC (pwr) LED will light up.

  2. Connect to Mount: The RJ45 connector is used to link the converter to your mount. You can either use the cable from your hand controller or a standard Ethernet cable (if the mount has an RJ45 port). After connection, the MOUNT (pwr) LED will illuminate, confirming that the mount is powered.

Driver Installation

  • Linux: No drivers are needed. The AMUSBMOUNT01 works out of the box with popular control software like INDI and KStars.
  • Windows: Simple driver installation may be required. Follow the installation instructions to get set up with your preferred control software.
